The occupation of the Bundesplatz was a break of the rules with an announcement. It doesn’t have much to do with friendly school and student demonstrations anymore. The climate strike movement is getting more radical.
What happened on Monday and Tuesday in Bern was a mix of eco-utopia, hippie provocation and group self-help show. The weather campers wanted maximum attention. By doing so, they may have encouraged their followers, but deterred everyone else. Even people who were previously well disposed towards them.
A year ago, the European “Fridays for Future” movement was still being discussed in Lausanne. For example, if you want to work with Extinction Rebellion’s radical climate activists, and if so, to what extent.
In the protest field in Bern there was no longer any dispute or diversity. The ideological specter that shaped the young climate strike movement has ended. In Bern, Climate Youth, Extinction Rebellion and other organizations have deliberately mixed and aligned them. There were hardly any students in Bern either. All the most experienced and trained activists.
The squatters of the Bundesplatz ignored all the ultimatums and offers.
That exposes his supposed offer of dialogue as a sham. They see themselves fighting, not only against climate change, but also against democracy in Switzerland, against “the system”.
Civil disobedience, therefore, will no longer be the exception for them in the future, but the rule. This draws their attention to the movement, but less and less understanding of the matter.
