Comment on the Basel elections: rejuvenation in the governing council is much needed

Red-Green fails because of his own arrogance and loses the majority in the executive branch after 16 years. The power of women thanks to Stephanie Eymann and Esther Keller. Baschi Dürr’s freedom, on the other hand, has hit rock bottom.

The people of Basel were dissatisfied with the governing council from 2016 to 2020. The old university suffered a historic rejection in this exciting election campaign. Although the two greats of the SP, Hans-Peter Wessels and Christoph Brutschin, announced their resignation from the beginning and thus made room, two magistrates, Elisabeth Ackermann (Greens) and now Baschi Dürr, were expelled from office.

Treatment with fresh cells is very necessary. Transportation policy is stuck at a dead end, the industry has clashed with the governing council, beers and cultural workers feel alone in the corona pandemic. The museums are in crisis, the fair is sold and almost bankrupt. In climate politics there is a lack of unity, there is disagreement in dealing with beggars and the countless demonstrations only annoy the people here. This city has lost its spirit, its unmistakable identity. But now there is a great opportunity. Fresh minds promise new ideas, they are the antidote to this indolence that had spread among the old crew.

Strong women

There is Stephanie Eymann. It represents the triumphant advance of the Liberal Party, which has long surpassed the FDP. Of all the candidates, Eymann communicated most skillfully early on. She took a stand on all issues and never ran into the knife. In the race for the presidential department, he has only to admit defeat to SP-Strahlemann Beat Jans. Eymann embodies the kind of woman most want: committed, experienced, authentic.

There’s Esther Keller. In the first vote he did not appear to be able to participate in the national upturn of the green liberals. Now, however, after the Ackermann debacle in late October, he benefited from the unsuccessful nomination procedure of the SP and the Greens. Many left-wing voters preferred to vote for Keller over Baschi Dürr to avoid a bourgeois majority. Keller embodies the kind of woman advancing in Switzerland: urban, modern, communicative, online, but full of concern for the environment and aware that climate change will dominate the political agenda for decades.

Great result: Esther Keller has made the leap to the governing council of Basel, as the first green liberal in history.

The SP did not have a plan B.

For the first time, green liberals take a seat in the executive branch; that’s historical. And that is why the red-green field in the governing council will have a majority on environmental issues in the next four years; at least the left has saved some of its power for the future. His entire election campaign was marked by arrogance and arrogance. When Elisabeth Ackermann crashed on the first vote, the SP and the Greens didn’t have a plan B handy in the drawer. Ackermann’s ineptitude was not to blame for the electoral defeat, but in his eyes it was the evil media. Because she absolutely had to be a woman, the decision was made overnight by Heidi Mück of the extremist Basta party. Mück rhetorically failed in the first days after his nomination, and with his radical positions on burning issues like the police and the Israel boycott movement he got in his own way.

Drought at its lowest point

Heidi Mück, who still obtained a decent electoral result, will be able to bear the defeat. Instead, Baschi Dürr experienced the lowest point of his political career. For the first time the FDP loses its seat in the government, for the first time in the history of the canton and the party; that is also historical. Freedom has lost its political compass, which is evident throughout the country. At Basel, he was overtaken by his former little brother, the Liberals. Thanks to their Basel roots, they convey closer proximity and more credible values.

Nothing is more humiliating for a government councilor than to be expelled by the people. Running a department of justice and security is a real task and, especially in Basel, thankless because demonstrations now seem to be part of everyday life. There is a demo for every nonsense. With his wavering attitude around this trend, Baschi Dürr pestered the left and right spectrum alternately for years. Only in the last weeks and months did the FDP man show a clear advantage; by then it was too late.

Now you can watch from a distance how the new Basel government is planning for the future after fresh cell treatment. Four men and three women are required, more than ever. It is going to be exciting.

Nothing is more humiliating for a government councilor than to be expelled by the people.
