The burden on the shoulders of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson could hardly have been greater on Monday when he convened the government’s crisis team for a special meeting. Not only are there a few days before the end of the Brexit transition period at the end of the year, there is uncertainty about the future trade relationship with the EU. Rather, a marked increase in the number of Covid 19 cases due to a highly contagious variant of the corona virus has also forced London and much of England into a sharp lockdown that threatens to last for several months and the economy threatens to stall. Several states have isolated the UK with travel bans and, due to emergency measures from France, freight traffic through the English Channel was partially paralyzed on Monday.
