But that was quick! A good two weeks ago, the president of the Post, Urs Schwaller (68), announced his resignation from the management of the state company at the end of November. And its successor is practically certain, as advertised by RTS. Former SP president Christian Levrat (50) should take over. Schwaller would be followed by another Freiburg resident. This is what the SP Post Minister Simonetta Sommaruga (60) proposes to the Federal Council. The latter has yet to approve the proposal, a matter of form. The decision must be communicated today.
Therefore, Levrat will refrain from running for the Freiburg State Council this fall. And he would also have to give up his seat on the Council of States.
For a solid public service
With the office, Levrat would return to his roots, as he used to be central secretary and president of the communication union, which also represented postal workers. In 2003 he was elected a member of the National Council; since 2012 he has been a member of the Council of States. From 2008 to 2020 he also presided over the SP. He is married and has three children.
For the SP, the election would be a blow, as Levrat represents a strong public service. He also fought on the front lines for the narrowly rejected postal initiative, which wanted to stop the dismantling of the post office.
Sensitive legacy
Levrat has a delicate heritage. Schwaller’s tenure was overshadowed by Postbus’s bite. The group’s affiliate had been cheating for subsidies for years. That even cost Susanne Ruoff her head (63).
Additionally, the Post is struggling with a sharp drop in earnings. In the year Corona 2020, the group only generated a profit of 178 million francs, 77 million less than the previous year. The balance before tax is even more dramatic: the operating result (EBIT) was CHF 178 million less than CHF 272 million. (rus)
