Christian Gross is about to return to the Bundesliga after ten years. The 66-year-old Zurich is the new designated coach at the bottom of the Schalke 04 table.
According to a decision by the supervisory board, the 66-year-old will receive a six-month contract with the bottom of the table in the Bundesliga, several German newspapers reported on Wednesday night.
Most recently, Christian Gross worked successfully for years in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, after causing a sensation in Switzerland, especially with FC Basel. Gross led Bebbi to four championship titles and four cups in ten years and in 2002 for the first time in the Champions League.
The location of S04 (4 points) is extremely critical. The unstable team has been showing terribly poor performance for a long time and have not won in the Bundesliga for 29 matches. Tasmania Berlin’s negative record (31 games without a win in 1965/66) is getting closer and closer.
Gross could lead the training Monday as the successor to the interim Huub Stevens solution. The Zurich resident would be Revierklub’s fourth coach this year. The miners had previously parted ways with David Wagner and Manuel Baum before Schalke’s “coach of the century” took over Stevens for two games.
A lot of work to do
The Zurich “fireman”, on the one hand, will focus on defense – they were 36 goals conceded in 13 games – and, on the other hand, he will also have to stimulate the offense. Schalke have only scored 8 goals so far. In the past, he managed to keep teams in danger of relegation in the league with both Tottenham and Stuttgart.
Gross ended his coaching career in May of this year. But he did not rule out a comeback. “Never say never. I definitely do not want to rule it out. But if so, then abroad,” Gross said in the spring in the “Sports Panorama”. He is a “footballer from head to toe” and “I miss football a lot.”
