Anyone sent to the corona quarantine cannot leave their apartment for ten days. Actually, this also applies to children. Is not easy. Especially if only the child is in quarantine. Strictly speaking, you should also stay away from the rest of the family. “However, the needs of the child must be considered, especially with young children,” writes the BAG in the instructional regulation.
The parents of a five-year-old boy did not want their son to be isolated for ten days in his room and still went to the forest with him in the afternoons and evenings by bike. “We feel like serious criminals,” say the mother and father of the “Aargauer Zeitung”. Her son was quarantined because his kindergarten teacher tested positive for the coronavirus.
“Short episodes of fresh air” are allowed for children
Now, after all, parents of quarantined children no longer have to feel nauseous when they go out with their children. Since October 23, there has been a relaxation for the little ones. “Brief episodes of fresh air are possible for quarantined children without contact with people outside the family,” the BAG writes in an ordinance. Because: “The needs of the child must be taken into account, especially with young children.”
Child Protection Switzerland welcomes these new instructions, but calls for even more relaxation, namely “longer fresh air spells”. “Breathing deeply” outdoors would certainly help “prevent conflict and domestic violence,” according to the organization’s statement.
Children need physical closeness
There should also be better solutions for the cases of infected children, demands the head of Swiss Child Protection, Regula Bernhard Hug. The minimum distance of 1.5 meters stipulated by BAG and the isolation in a room where you are also supposed to eat alone are “incompatible with the best interests of the child,” criticized Child Protection Switzerland.
“Young children cannot understand that they are treated like lepers and are no longer on their knees,” he tells the “Aargauer Zeitung”. In his opinion, older children cannot simply be left alone either. Therefore, physical closeness should be allowed, as should participation in normal family life.
“If the children stay among them, nothing happens to them”
Bernhard Hug receives encouragement from Aargau CVP National Councilor, Marianne Binder. “It is neither reasonable nor realistic to isolate children under the age of six. Not for the kids, not for the parents, ”says Binder.
A doctor also begs for relaxation. Christoph Berger, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Hygiene at Children’s Hospital Zurich, points to several international studies. “They show that children hardly infect other children and teachers if they adhere to the usual rules of distance and hygiene.” The little ones would also get sick very rarely and therefore transmit the virus much less to adults. “And if the children stay with them, nothing happens to them.”
Berger is of the same opinion as the former director of the department of communicable diseases at FOPH, Director Daniel Koch: “Children are not the drivers of the pandemic.”
That is why children should be able to move freely during the quarantine period and should only avoid contact with people outside the family, Berger says. He also suggests reducing the quarantine period for asymptomatic children to five days. (man)
