Child deductions: Parliament miscalculated when presenting child deductions – News

Parliament miscalculated ahead of the last elections in 2019: with 63 percent no votes, the electorate sent the bill for higher deductions for clearly bachab children. The old parliament had prepared the draft before the last elections. He turned a $ 10 million project into a $ 380 million project.

Little became much more

The idea for the 10 million came from the Federal Council, which proposed higher deductions just for childcare costs. In parliament, a majority of the SVP, FDP, CVP and BDP wanted more: higher flat rate child allowances. For the SP, which was already skeptical about the 10 million bill, the decision to hold a referendum was clear: because higher tax deductions benefit higher income more than lower income.

The center-right argued that wealthier households in particular should be supported, after all, these clientele received nothing else from the state. In other words: there are no subsidies for premiums for health insurance, daycare, apartment. But that only convinced a minority. Because the expansion of the workforce to a project of 380 million generated resistance not only on the left.

Resistance from different sides

He also led some commoners to the field of no-camp. A non-liberal committee was quickly formed, led by the FDP and green liberal politicians. Ultimately, the proposal did not help the Finance Minister, Ueli Maurer, not to hide that he did not like this type of increase in tax deductions. So those are not accumulated on different pages.

At the same time, the bill’s proponents were barely able to drown their opponents, in a referendum campaign that was overshadowed by other, louder and more debated proposals on this busy Sunday.

Go back to the Federal Council proposal?

Finally, the result of the vote can also reflect the result of the last elections, in which progressive socio-political forces in the Bundestag were strengthened.

A new edition of the previous Federal Council proposal can now win a majority in parliament – higher deductions only on costs of care. Support for this is not only available in the ranks of the FDP and GLP, the left is also signaling a concession here. The maximum deductions for outpatient costs would be increased from CHF 10,000 to CHF 25,000 per child. And that would return the template to field one.
