Sorting Yard Accident at Muttenz BL: Shortly after 9pm there was a dangerous hydrochloric acid incident on Monday night! A few hundred liters of hydrochloric acid leak through a hole in a tank car and go underground.
The crash site is cordoned off in a large area. Firefighters move, emergency services wear protective clothing. The incident proceeds lightly. “The firefighters were able to seal the hole in the tank car and lift the car into an emergency container, from where the dripping liquid was collected,” the construction department said.
Hydrochloric acid had to be pumped
The hydrochloric acid remaining in the car could be pumped into another car. A tank car had to be cooled. The fire service lasted until Tuesday morning. One person was taken to the hospital for a checkup.
Train traffic was temporarily affected during the night: several trains had to be diverted. The outage has now been resolved and the trains can return to normal operation.
Similar exercise scenario from 2017
Three years ago, rescuers had practiced a similar scenario in the Muttenz sorting yard, as reported by “bazonline.ch”: several freight cars derailed, they were loaded with an unknown liquid.
An explosive tanker full of gasoline was parked on the next platform. Furthermore, the crash site was blocked by a special train full of football fans. (eb)
