The situation seemed to have calmed down, but the number of cases has increased considerably for a week. On Monday alone, 990 people in Switzerland tested positive. The number of cases in the last seven days has doubled compared to the previous week, and not all late registrations have been counted. Even if the figures are barely comparable to March / April: such a high number of cases is dangerous for both contact tracing and the cantons’ testing regime.

In Zurich, St. Gallen and Ticino, the 7-day average has more than doubled compared to the previous week, and in the smaller cantons with smaller numbers it has even multiplied. The cantons of Geneva and Vaud in western Switzerland, which were previously supposed to stabilize in number, are also seeing exponential increases again. Why are the numbers suddenly increasing again? Explanations for this vary. One reason could be colder temperatures, says epidemiologist Tanja Stadler. If more people are indoors again and they ventilate less, this increases the risk of infection. Health Minister Alain Berset said yesterday that many of the infections are still caused by so-called cluster events: “There were private events that suddenly caused quite a few infections.”

New infections are still barely reflected in the number of hospital admissions or deaths. This is usually noticed two to three weeks (hospital admissions) or four to five weeks (death) later.
