- Chelsea win the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Atlético 2-0.
- Thanks to goals from Hakim Ziyech and Emerson at home at Stamford Bridge, the Londoners are back in the quarter-finals for the first time in 7 years.
- In the second game of the afternoon, Bayern prevailed thanks to a 2-1 victory against Lazio Roma.
At 4 minutes, Atlético managed to do something that they had not been able to do in the first leg in Bucharest in 90 minutes: a shot on goal. Renan Lodi’s hasty direct buyout presented Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy with little trouble, but at least.
So Chelsea took over the dictation of the game. After a quarter of an hour, Thomas Tuchel’s team had 75 percent possession. In the 34th minute, Chelsea put their superiority on the scoreboard.
Ironically, the much-scolded German offensive duo initiated the goal: Kai Havertz outscored the penultimate opponent after a counterattack he launched, Timo Werner shot last with a perfect cross pass. Hakim Ziyech just had to insert it.
Confident and inconsiderate athletic
Shortly before the break, Mateo Kovacic’s long shot missed the post. And shortly after the reboot, it was mostly the blues that were dangerous. Ziyech and formidable central defender Antonio Rüdiger missed with dangerous degrees from a distance.
And Atlético? Apart from a few harmless punctures, the rojiblancos were astonishingly pale. Most of them were at the end of their game 30 meters from the gate. Only João Félix, out of 120 million men, got through Chelsea’s defense a bit in the finals, but was unsuccessful without the necessary support.
All Spanish hopes were dashed when Stefan Savic was sent off the pitch after an unnecessary nudge against Rüdiger (82nd). In injury time, one of Chelsea’s many counterattacks also materialized – substitute Emerson finished with his first touch of the ball to score his first goal in a blue dress.
Simeone infuriates, Suárez suffers
There was great excitement in the 27th minute when Atlético’s Yannick Carrasco fell into the opposing penalty area: Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta had held the Belgian gently on the upper body, very little for a penalty. Not surprisingly, Madrid with coach Diego Simeone at the helm saw it differently. And the appearance of Luis Suárez in this scene caused at most a movement of the head (see video below).
As Atlético nears a crisis with defeat after their recent equally weak La Liga appearances, Tuchel remains undefeated in their 13th meeting with the English. Thanks to the victory, he once again leads Chelsea to the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since the 2013/14 season.
