It took less than a year to develop a vaccine for Covid-19. It has never been as fast as with Corona, but it should improve even more in the future. The international initiative Cepi, which has the support of billionaire Bill Gates (65), has presented an explosive project.
With a five-year plan of one billion, they want to try to reduce the development time of new vaccines to 100 days. That was a third of the time it took for the first Covid 19 vaccines, the organization said in Oslo on Wednesday. That would take $ 3.5 billion. Cepi called on governments, health organizations and other partners to support the plan.
Cepi, the “Coalition for Innovations in Epidemic Preparedness”, was founded in 2017 by Norway and India with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wellcome Trust and the World Economic Forum in Davos. The organization has been supporting the development and worldwide distribution of Covid vaccines since last year.

From Cepi’s point of view, the proposed five-year plan could “reduce or even eliminate” future risks of pandemics. This could prevent millions of deaths and trillions of losses in the economy, he said. This is a project similar to the moon landing, the organization said.
The enormous acceleration in vaccine development will be achieved by optimizing the possibilities for faster carrier platforms such as mRNA. New clinical trial networks should help. Close cooperation with supervisory authorities aims to standardize approval requirements. Production capacities will also be networked so that vaccines can be manufactured quickly.
