Anyone looking to switch to the Italian side of the ski area for the season opener in Zermatt VS yesterday was in for a surprise. The slope on the ridge just off the Klein Matterhorn, which leads to Italy, was cordoned off with a temporary border fence, according to the “SonntagsZeitung”.
But that’s not all: two carabinieri patrolled the area, which skiers can fine up to 400 euros if they want to oppose the ban on the slopes. The policemen come from Cervinia (I), the town south of the Matterhorn.
Pickling remains closed in Austria
By order of the Italian government, the ski area must be closed on all public holidays until at least January 7. Like all ski areas in the country. France and Germany also want their elevators to work after the holidays.
In addition to Switzerland and Spain, Austria is one of the countries that has so far refused to close its ski resorts during the holidays. But with a ten-day quarantine obligation for travelers from risky areas, the Vienna government decided on Wednesday to heavily halt tourism during this time. The lifts in the ski areas, on the other hand, can open from December 24 and can therefore be used mainly by local tourists. (pbe)
