Canton of Uri joins cantons of central Switzerland – ski areas are closed until December 29
As ski accidents place an even greater burden on the healthcare system, the Uri government has decided to close the ski areas for Christmas. Cross-country skiing is still possible.

Due to the epidemiological situation and the tense situation in hospitals in central Switzerland, the Uri government has decided to close the Uri ski areas between December 22 and 29. The reason is that “an additional burden on hospitals and health personnel from snow sport incidents is not reasonable at present.” In particular, the situation at the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital is tense, so the decision can also be seen as a sign of solidarity with the central cantons. Landamman Urban Camenzind says about the decision:
“The decisions that were made today were not easy at all for the governing council and the special personnel of COVID-19.”
In return, he also expects the federal government to show solidarity with damaged companies.
According to a government statement, the ban only affects chair lifts and chair lifts. Nor is the preparation of ski and toboggan runs allowed. However, other tracks can be used, as well as walking trails and cross-country ski trails. The reason for this is the lower risk of accidents.
The situation will be reassessed after one week.
The situation will be reassessed on December 28 and it will be decided whether the ski areas will open from December 30.
In its announcement, the governing council also calls for sports activities that involve a “higher risk of accidents” to be avoided. The government also calls on the people of Uri to reduce their radius of movement and avoid crowds. Daytime tourists, in particular, should stay home during the festive season. In the event that excursion tourism gets out of control, the governing council will take control measures.
