Sometimes things go crazy in the Zurich parliaments. Here we collect notable feedback from council chambers.

“Congratulations to Natalie Rickli, Health Director: Dieter Thomas Heck has found a worthy successor by speaking quickly.”

Beatrix Frey-Eigenmann (ndp.) Is filled with admiration for the performance of Health Director Natalie Rickli (svp.). This announced that it would take about a quarter of an hour to read a response from the government. In the end, it didn’t even take seven minutes. Rickli thus enters the league of the legendary German fast-speaking television.

Here is a small sample of their performance:

At the bottom: Contact tracing works well, says health director Natalie Rickli. But the people of Zurich should be tested faster.

“Salt or white gold, as it used to be called, is a fascinating luxury item.”

Judith Stofer (al.) Praises the white dust in the sky during the discussion on the canton’s so-called salt platform. It’s addictive, she says. Zurich must not give up its monopoly under any circumstances. Anyone who has confused salt and sugar while drinking coffee is likely to contradict it.

What else was negotiated?e: Liberals in Zurich are calling for quarantine regulations to be relaxed.

“Now we will take them hostage, and I will give a permanent speech until everyone agrees.”

Urs Riklin (Greens) wants fewer parking spaces near school buildings. It is not necessary to take colleagues hostage at the end of the meeting, because apparently Riklin speaks from the hearts of the majority in the local council. The postulate to abolish parking spaces in the rest areas of primary schools is referred to the city council for examination.

What else was negotiated?: The supposedly racist vote of an SVP politician causes an uproar in the city parliament. But he doesn’t say it that way.

September 7, 2020, Cantonal Council

“We at CVP seem to be a bit liberal on this issue.”

Lorenz Schmid (cvp., Männedorf) reacts creatively when he realizes that his group is alone in the hall. More liberal than the FDP. These and all other parliamentary groups support an initiative to prevent apprenticeship graduates from obtaining permanent employment due to the Corona crisis.

At the bottom: The Corona crisis should bring as few handicaps as possible for schoolchildren and training graduates.

“It leads to the absurd situation that beekeepers in the city of Zurich have to bring their dark young queen bees to Glarnerland as sex tourists.”

From time to time, local Zurich politicians take excursions to exotic regions: Olivia Romanelli (al.) Is committed to protecting the so-called dark bee, a native subspecies of the honey bee. This species is protected in the Glarus region and Romanelli wants special support to be given to it in the city of Zurich. Your movement found the majority.

What else was negotiated?: Stadtzürcher head of civil engineering Richard Wolff (al.) Makes a surprising announcement: As an experiment, the Bellerivestrasse will be reduced from four to two lanes.

August 31, 2020, Cantonal Council

“Do not think that glyphosate can no longer be found in the urine of the Swiss. (…) If you have a beer tonight, you will have your dose “.

SVP farmer and parliamentary group leader Martin Hübscher warns SP cantonal councilor Markus Bärtschiger of illusions, with a real example: beer barley is imported almost entirely from Germany, and there you can spray the herbicide shortly before harvest, as it is not sufficiently decomposed and thus found the way to Switzerland, to beer and to the beer drinker.

What else was negotiated?: The armory agreement between the canton and the city of Zurich clears a decisive obstacle.

August 19, 2020, local council

“There are demonstrations for the climate, demonstrations of women, demonstrations against racism, but no demonstrations against the Beijing regime, which is responsible for this misery that we have here.”

In a personal statement, SVP councilor Bernhard in Oberdorf is outraged by the lack of criticism against China. Rather, the VBZ trams advertised in China would curve around Zurich. In Oberdorf, however, the government demands that the town twinning with Kunming be suspended. Because the Far Eastern country is not only responsible for the corona virus, but also for the “Stasi law” in Hong Kong and the “flat march” of the protesters.

What else was negotiated: the city of Zurich wants to turn the theater scene upside down with a new concept of financing. But people on the scene are scared of closures.

August 17, 2020, Cantonal Council

“Biting is a crime and is not suitable for crown.”

Security Director Mario Fehr (sp.) Wonders why he shows biting law enforcement inhibitions by squatting humorously. “In the Covid 19 crisis, you showed the city of Zurich that you can bite,” attracts Marc Bourgeois (n.d.), but to no avail.

What else was negotiated?: The Cantonal Council refuses to set a legal deadline for the police to evacuate the occupied properties.

July 8, 2020, town hall

“Whoever throws millions out the window like you can give me free parking.”

Johann Widmer (svp.), Visibly upset, denies to the left side of the council any economic experience in the discussion on the 2019 bill. You see it differently there, of course.

What else was negotiated: Business apartments in the city center should no longer displace apartments for residents of Zurich.
