Vaccinations will begin in Switzerland from January 4. The federal government is campaigning for this with posters, a website, and a hotline.
Experts and representatives of the federal government reported on the vaccination strategy at a press conference in Bern. They emphasized that vaccines are voluntary. No vaccination requirement is provided. The objective of the campaign is that everyone can decide if they want to be vaccinated, well informed.
Since the vaccination doses would arrive in Switzerland in stages, vaccinating the population will take months.
“Vaccination is very effective”
Christoph Berger, president of the Federal Commission for Vaccination Affairs (EKIF), recommends vaccination. The Pfizer / Biontech mRNA vaccine is very effective. “There may be local side effects, as often occur after vaccines, for example, fatigue, headache or fever.”
The vaccination commission has defined the target groups that should receive vaccination as a priority:
- People at special risk
- Health workers with patient contact
- Close contacts with particularly vulnerable people
- People in communal facilities at higher risk of infection and outbreak.
First, the particularly endangered group can be vaccinated in Switzerland, says Christoph Berger. “These are people 75 and over. This is followed by adults with chronic diseases at higher risk. “These include, for example, heart disease, respiratory disease, kidney disease, diabetes, obesity or other immune deficiencies.
Vaccination should also be done if someone has already had Covid-19, but not directly during the illness. “Only if you have a severe allergy to the components of the vaccine, you should not get vaccinated,” says Berger.
There are not enough doses of vaccine available.
Virginie Masserey, Head of Infection Control at FOPH, says that initially there will not be enough doses available to vaccinate everyone. “Vaccination is no reason not to be careful now.” Vaccination will take effect if there are fewer cases than at present.
The Pfizer / Biontech vaccine has a high level of safety and efficiency. “This Tuesday 107,000 cans were delivered,” says Masserey. It is very likely that another 250,000 cans will arrive in January.
Nationwide vaccination will begin on January 4. The goal is to reduce the number of serious infections and the number of hospitalizations.
National campaign and hotline
The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) has started a national information campaign for vaccination against Covid-19. The authorities want to inform the population about vaccination with posters and an information website. To this end, the federal government has launched the website bag-coronavirus.ch/imektion.
