The devastating wildfires in California continue. According to media reports, around 1000 people are isolated from the outside world in a camp in a national park in the Sierra Nevada. Ten campers were injured, but all are safe at this time.
The only access road was not passable due to a fire. Firefighters and rescue planes tried to access the area. Campers threatened by the flames are instructed to jump into the water of the Mammoth Pool Reservoir if necessary, California media reported, citing a spokesperson for the national park.
According to the fire department’s situation report on Saturday, nearly 12,500 emergency services were recently employed in the state to contain more than 20 major fires. More than 900 fires were said to have broken out since the lightning strikes that started the first fires in mid-August. A good 6,000 square kilometers of land has been burned. So far at least eight people have died. Almost 3,300 buildings were reported to have been destroyed.
The fire department warns the population of the heat
The two largest fires recently occurred near the metropolis of San Francisco. More than 10,500 people are still unable to return to their houses and apartments.
The fire department asked residents of affected regions in the state to spend as little time outdoors as possible due to rising temperatures this long holiday weekend. New fires could easily start in current weather conditions. Labor Day, a commemorative day for the labor movement, is celebrated in the United States on Monday. (kes / SDA)
