Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB) turned black in 2019 despite a further decrease in passenger numbers. The end result was a gain of CHF 355,321 compared to a loss of CHF 765,677 in the previous year.

In addition, BVB was able to report an operating profit of 1.6 million Swiss francs at EBIT level last year, as announced by the transport company belonging to the Canton of Basel-City on Monday. In 2018, there was still an operating loss of CHF 248,000.

Fixed staff shortages

With an income of 256.5 million Swiss francs, operating income in 2019 was around 5.7 million Swiss francs higher than the previous year. This increase is due, among other things, to an increase in compensation paid by the canton of Basel-City from around CHF 4 million to almost CHF 81 million.

In contrast, traffic revenue fell from CHF 122.7 to CHF 120.3 million. Because for the fourth time in a row, BVB suffered a decrease in passengers in 2019. Last year, the number of passengers fell from 127.74 to 126.63 million.

BVB was able to remedy its staff shortages last year. The number of employees increased from 1,243 to 1,336. A total of 108 people were trained to drive, as can be seen in the annual report.
