But not Kanti in Brugg or Lenzburg? Two large councilors prefer to expand schools in their communities – Brugg – Aargau

“The cantonal schools are spatially overburdened, the number of young people aged 15 to 19 will increase considerably in the coming decades,” writes education director Alex Hürzeler in the 2045 development strategy for Aargau middle schools. In addition, the proportion of school dropouts who want to go to Kanti after the district school has been increasing steadily in the past ten years. According to current school statistics, about 20 percent of schoolchildren planned to enter high school last year.

For this reason, extensions to existing locations are planned, and two new cantonal schools will be built: one in Fricktal and one in the Brugg-Lenzburg area. The Grand Council decided this in September 2019 and gave the government a mandate to develop concrete proposals for this.

An Aarau woman and a well-being for expansion in their communities.

Two council members now question this concept: Suzanne Marclay (FDP, Aarau City Councilor) and Roland Vogt (Senior Vice President, Wohlen City Councilor) call for the new building to be abandoned in the Brugg-Lenzburg area. Instead, the governing council should present a variant that foresees the expansion of the new cantonal school in Aarau and the cantonal school in Wohlen.

In the planning report of the governing council, however, he says: “Due to the existing space, there is no potential for expansion in the area of the new cantonal school in Aarau without fundamental structural changes.” From the movementists’ perspective, however, this vision falls short. “In the case of an in-depth examination of the expansion potential, the entire area and the adjacent parcels should be included in the observation perimeter,” he said in the advance.

Suzanne Marclay says on request: “The planning report shows that there is a need for help in the Aarau area.” However, the report only refers to the expansion options of the old cantonal school in Aarau at the train station. “The expansion options of the new cantonal school in Aarau are not shown in any way, in my opinion, it is necessary to catch up”, emphasizes Marclay.

Susanne Marclay sees this new cantonal school in Aarau as a candidate for expansion.

There are undeveloped areas at the Kanti Wohlen site that would allow doubling the capacity of 33 to 66 classes today. From the point of view of the governing council, however, this does not make sense because the location’s catchment area is limited to the Freiamt. In the event of a massive expansion, students would have to be assigned to Wohlen, who would otherwise attend another canton school due to their place of residence and public transport connections.

Upon request, Roland Vogt admits that Wohlen is not exactly downtown. If a new Kanti were not created in the Lenzburg-Brugg area, students from these areas could come to Wohlen.

SVP initiative for expansion instead of new building rejected on the Grand Council

According to Vogt, the expansion of the Wohlen Cantonal School should also be examined for financial reasons: “I think that expanding an existing school is cheaper than building a completely new one.” Marclay says that expanding locations would create synergies in the use of infrastructure such as libraries, coffee shops, etc. Furthermore, this brings advantages for teachers. “The larger a location, the more attractive work packages can be offered,” says Marclay. However, unnecessary division could backfire.

In the debate at the Grand Council in the fall of 2019, the SVP Group had already made a request similar to that of Marclay and Vogt. Consequently, a new cantonal school was to be built in Fricktal, the second new building in the Brugg-Lenzburg area was not compulsory. Instead, additional space could be made available for 22 to 33 apartments at existing locations in Aarau, Baden, Wettingen and Wohlen. The application failed with 70 to 61 votes, but Suzanne Marclay sees good prospects for the new company. “It must be in the interest of the Grand Council that it can make its decisions based on complete facts.”

Meanwhile, Grand Councilor Titus Meier, a colleague from the Marclay party, is campaigning for a new Kanti in the Brugg-Windisch area. In March, Meier submitted a proposal to the Brugg residents council on how the city would work to achieve this at the political level. The Windisch municipal council has already prepared a dossier for a new Kanti in the Bachthalen area.

The Lenzburg authorities could imagine a new canton school on the site of the old armory. That’s what city official Daniel Mosimann (SP) said last year. So far, no concrete efforts have been made to bring the Kanti to Lenzburg.
