- Amazon plans to open a data center in Switzerland for its cloud affiliate Amazon Web Services.
- The data center will open in 2022.
- It should be in the greater Zurich area, no more is known yet.
Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon in the cloud, is a global leader in the data business. As soon as the new data center goes live, AWS customers can store their data on Swiss servers.
“Until now, many customers have been using our servers in Frankfurt or Milan. But they want a data center close by, ”says Werner Vogels, CTO. He is considered the architect of the cloud at Amazon.
AWS customers include companies like Novartis, SBB and Post, and according to their own information there are around 10,000 companies in Switzerland. With an on-site data center, the American giant can build trust and reduce latency. This means that data processes stored in the cloud run smoother and with fewer delays.
Required storage space
Vogels from Amazon says that safety is a priority. “Our clients have control over who has access to the data and who does not.” However, for security expert Hannes Lubich, one thing is clear: If a US group keeps data on companies in Switzerland, legal issues arise. “With Swiss suppliers, it is clear from the beginning that the Swiss legal system will apply. This is not clear with foreign suppliers. “And clarifying this in case of dispute takes a long time.
The services of storage space providers are in demand. Because there is always more data and it takes up a lot of space. In addition to Amazon, other American companies such as Microsoft, IBM and Google are also at the forefront in this business. They both have local data centers in Switzerland for some time. Among Swiss providers, the big players in the digital cloud business are, for example, Swisscom or green.ch.
