Ski resorts fought hard to stay open. They can still be used in Graubünden. However, the balance from the beginning of the season to the end of December is anything but positive.
There were 17 percent fewer guests than last year, causing a 23 percent drop in sales. “After two years of relaxation, we are back to the level of a year with little snow and a weak economy,” says Martin Hug, president of the Graubünden mountain railways.
Lower Engadin, the most affected
The decline is particularly significant in the Lower Engadine: a third fewer guests than the previous year. According to a press release from the Graubünden mountain railways, this is due to the closure of the Ischgl ski area, which is connected to Samnaun GR.
Despite the decline in sales, the mountain railways are convinced that the ski areas will remain open: “It is a balanced solution for the health of the guests and the economy of Grisons.” In particular, mountain railways had to limit the number of daily tickets to two-thirds of the previous year. Also, restaurants could only offer take out food.
Federal government compensation
Above all, the mountain railways missed “older pleasure skiers and family activities” this winter. Overall, it is the third weak winter season in five years for the people of Graubünden. For the president of the mountain railways, Martin Hug, it is therefore clear that the mountain railways must be compensated for the losses suffered by the canton and the federal government. “Negotiations are ongoing, but the details are not yet ready for a decision,” write the mountain railways.
Guests’ need to exercise in nature was clearly felt, according to the mountain railways. But due to the obligation to carry takeout in restaurants, the guests stayed much less time.
