Thanks to a goal from Breel Embolo, Gladbach wins 1-0 in Bielefeld. Union Berlin also wins and moves up the table.
It was a break to forget for Breel Embolo. The Gladbach striker missed one opportunity after another in Bielefeld in the first 45 minutes. At 6 minutes he missed the empty goal after a rebound off the post.
In the second round, however, the Swiss international gave an answer: after a direct pass, he stood his ground in a duel and made it 1-0 (58th). Still the only goal of the match, Gladbach (with Yann Sommer and Nico Elvedi) beat the promoted Bielefeld (with Cédric Brunner) 1-0.
Berlin catches Dortmund
Union Berlin underscored its European ambitions with another strong presence. Swiss coach Urs Fischer’s team easily won 2-0 in Bremen and edged fourth-placed Dortmund at least temporarily.
Sheraldo Becker (12th) and Taiwo Awoniyi (29th) were responsible for the goals.
Frankfurt thanks to own goal to turn
Eintracht Frankfurt turned a deficit into a 2-1 win against Leverkusen. Zurich’s Djibril Sow started the change with an exemplary deep pass to Amin Younes, who made it 1: 1 in the meantime (22nd minute).
Previously, Nobodym Amiri’s Leverkusen goalkeeper Kevin Trapp grabbed his heel between his legs (10th). The decision was made by Edmond Tapsoba in the 54th minute with an unfortunate own goal. Steven Zuber just sat on the bench on the Frankfurt side.
Rubén Vargas managed a narrow 1-0 victory with Augsburg near Cologne. Fullback Iago scored the golden goal just a quarter of an hour before the end.
