- Stefan Küng wins his first world championship medal in the time trial in Imola. Thurgau is almost 30 seconds behind the winner Filippo Ganna (ITA) in 3rd place.
- Küng is only 3 seconds behind Wout van Aert’s (BEL) silver medal.
- Rohan Dennis (AUS), the winner of the last two years, only comes in fifth place.
Stefan Küng had to worry about the premiere on the podium of the time trial until the end. Rohan Dennis, the great dominator of the last two World Cup races in Yorkshire 2019 and Innsbruck 2018, was the only one still on the track and could have pushed Thurgau out of third place.
But the Australian, who was still 20 seconds ahead of Küng after 14.9 kilometers, couldn’t keep up. He finally lost 10 seconds to the Swiss and had to settle for fifth place.
Ganna makes the Italians cheer
Local Filippo Ganna became world champion on the 31.7 km course from Imola in a superior manner, winning 27 seconds ahead of Belgian Wout van Aert and 30 seconds ahead of Küng.
Ganna, 24, had caused a sensation so far, especially on the track. In the individual pursuit, he is four times world champion. On the road he made people sit up and take notice with his victory in the Tyrrhenian Adriatic individual time trial in early September. Ganna is the first Italian to win gold in an individual competition in a Time Trial World Cup.
Küng provides confirmation for a successful MS
For Küng it was the second medal in a World Championship after the bronze medal in the road race in Yorkshire last year. A month ago he won gold in the European Championship time trial.
After Marlen Reusser’s World Championship silver in Thursday’s time trial, it was already the second medal for the Swiss delegation at the Imola Championships.
