British leave Verbier in secret despite quarantine

Suddenly hotel beds and chalets are empty again – around 200 Britons should be quarantined here. The federal government had retroactively imposed a quarantine on travelers from Britain on Monday. This is due to the mutated corona virus that is proliferating in England.

Verbier is particularly affected, according to the “SonntagsZeitung”. 400 English tourists are affected there. Half of them have secretly left before the quarantine expired.

The congregation feels abandoned

“Many of them were quarantined for a day before leaving unnoticed under cover of darkness,” Jean-Marc Sandoz, communications officer for the Bagnes municipality in Valais, to which Verbier belongs, told the newspaper. Hoteliers realized this because their calls to the quarantine rooms repeatedly went unanswered or the meals left in front of the rooms had not been consumed.

The big question is: where have the tourists gone? At that time there were no flights between Switzerland and Great Britain. “That was the worst week our community has ever experienced,” says Sandoz. The municipality feels abandoned by the federal government and the canton in an “unprecedented situation.”
