Alex Kuprecht (62) is the new president of the Council of States. The political senior vice president of the canton of Schwyz was unanimously elected on Monday and will lead the Council of States negotiations next year. The Ländlerkapelle by popular musician Carlo Brunner (65) played in parliament in honor of Kuprecht.
The slippery appearance doesn’t just cause joy. After the councilor of the SP, Carlo Sommaruga (61) shared a video of the concert on Twitter, a storm of indignation broke out. In addition to him and one other musician, Brunner’s band also included two soprano saxophonists. The fear of many users: wind instruments could promote the spread of the coronavirus.
“You can’t make that up”
“I am surprised,” writes one user. Shouldn’t our leaders set a good example? That is disrespectful and ignorant. “Another user becomes even more aggressive:” This is a symbol of utter stupidity. (…) Disgusting! “Professional voices have also commented on the concert on the small chamber. For example, the virologist Christian Althaus criticizes: “The country, which will soon have 5,000 deaths in relation to Covid-19, continues to celebrate. And with brass music. Meanwhile, the rest of the population is trying to contain the pandemic. “You couldn’t make that up. Spicy: Althaus is a member of the federal scientific task force.
Alex Kuprecht defends himself against criticism
The president of the Council of States, Alex Kuprecht, does not want to let the criticism fall on him. “The rules of Corona were observed at all times. The distance from the musicians was over three meters, ”the senior vice president tells BLICK. Furthermore, all the MPs are said to have stood behind the Plexiglas walls and the musicians were said to have worn masks before and after. “It was not a wind orchestra, just two musicians playing wind instruments,” says Kuprecht. The band’s director, Carlo Brunner, has yet to comment on BLICK’s request.
The fact is that in Bern, musical events and concerts are only allowed with up to 15 people in the audience. With all the members of the Council of States and parliamentary staff present, there should have been more than 50 spectators in the small chamber. But it is also a fact: community assemblies and meetings of parliaments can take place if a protection concept is established and implemented. That was the case with Brunner and his musicians.
Canton cannot impose any requirements
Parliamentary Services also emphasize this: “Legislative bodies are exempt from the ban on events. The canton of Bern cannot impose any conditions on the national parliament in this regard, ”explains information director Karin Burkhalter.
The personal wish of the President of the Council of States, Alex Kuprecht, was to invite a marching band. And: “The celebrations took place in a very reduced format.”
He also noted that the corridors of the parliament building would have good air quality thanks to ventilation. “Plus, the council members are protected by Plexiglas,” Burkhalter says. “The concept of protection corresponds to the official requirements.”
