Hopes for a Brexit breakthrough on Sunday appear to be smaller than ever on both sides. Nationally, Johnson is under little pressure to give in to Brussels. And yet a no-deal Brexit could have far-reaching consequences for the Prime Minister.
When Boris Johnson won a comfortable 80-seat majority in the general election exactly one year ago, he vowed to redeem the country from the grueling Brexit lockdown. Britain will not only formally leave the EU in 2020, but will also embark on a prosperous future in 2021 thanks to a free trade agreement. Trade talks with the EU have now turned out to be much more difficult than Brexit supporters predicted. A few weeks before the end of the year-end transition period, Johnson said Friday that a no-deal scenario was “very likely.” The president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was equally pessimistic. Hopes for a breakthrough in the conversation planned for Sunday between Johnson and von der Leyen seemed smaller than ever on both sides.
