During the months of April, May and June, Swiss expanded around 750 seats in the economy class of three Boeing 777s to make room for cargo.
The seats are currently in a warehouse in Basel, said Ashwin Bhat, head of the Swiss freight business, in an interview with CH Media newspapers. For a time, transports were concentrated on certain routes, including China, to transport protective medical equipment and masks.
There were times when he wondered if he had really suggested to his boss that the seats be enlarged. “It felt surreal,” Bhat said. After several weeks of more cargo than passenger flights, this is now changing smoothly.
Last flight with mask charge two weeks ago
Swiss continues to operate pure cargo flights, for example to Boston, Delhi and Mumbai. From the end of August, Swiss will fly a Boeing 777 to Buenos Aires once a week, and from September also to Boston and San Francisco.
Since the end of March, Swiss has carried out around 800 pure cargo flights and transported 27,000 tonnes of goods. The last flight with masks was about two weeks ago. If suddenly there were too few masks again, Swiss would be ready. (SDA / uro)
