From the Caterham and Lotus vehicles, we have known that less weight never hurts. BMW is also aware of this and has already sharpened several M models for the CSL. There is still something missing on the M2. Now the Lightweight Performance company is jumping into this gap.
The M2 competition has been on the market since 2018. The superior version, the M2 CS, was recently introduced by BMW in limited quantities. But if you ask BMW fans, an acronym has long been missing. CSL – Lightweight Coupé Sport construction.
Sinn-Fleisbach Lightweight Performance Tuner knows the abbreviation very well. There he uses an E46 M3 CSL as a long-standing company car for track days and events. “Our CSL is a huge part of the company’s history. For more than 10 years we have traveled the common path from developer of our products to racing taxi on various race tracks.”
What could be more obvious than implementing CSL genes based on M2 competition? Hardly said done: the steel roof was replaced by a carbon roof. This saves 6.5 kilos and ensures a lower center of gravity.
Additional lightweight components such as a front spoiler, rear diffuser and carbon rear spoiler complement the aerodynamics to generate safe driving behavior at higher speeds through increased contact pressure. Visually, attachments also do a lot of things.
Did we just write higher speeds? Sure! This M2 competition offers 494 hp and 653 Nm of torque, the forward thrust only stops at 303 km / h. A TÜV certificate is included. For comparison: the normal M2 CS is 410 HP and 550 Nm.
The 19-inch wheels are also lightweight. The lightweight forged wheel weighs just 9.2 kilograms without tires, making it about three kilograms lighter than the standard wheel.
OPF’s lightweight exhaust system (CE approved) reduces weight by another 7 kilos. For the chassis, Lightweight used a Bilstein Clubsport coilover kit.
These ingredients result in a lap time of 1: 31.16 at the Sachsenring. For comparison: the normal M2 CS made the round at 1: 34.97. Thus, the Lightweight Performance M2 competition ranks among the super athletes.
Very important: the requirement for this conversion was that daily fitness does not suffer. He drove the lap time in a car with a back seat and all the comfort features.
