As reported by the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, Biontech / Pfizer is said to have offered an exorbitant price at the beginning of the vaccination negotiations. They wanted to take 54.08 euros, or just under 59 francs, from the EU for one dose of vaccination. And that’s with a purchase of 500 million cans.
In total, Pfizer / Biontech wanted € 27 billion. This price already includes “the highest percentage of discount” that has been offered to an industrialized country worldwide. This is evident in the documents available to the newspaper.
Offer twenty times more expensive than the Astrazeneca vaccine
At the price per dose, the Biontech vaccine would have been about twenty times more expensive than one dose of the Astrazeneca vaccine. One dose of the vaccine costs about 2 francs.
The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” quotes the chairman of the Drug Commission of the German Medical Association, Wolf Dieter Ludwig: “I think the price is doubtful.” And also: “I see in him a search for benefits that is in no way justified in the current situation of the pandemic.”
How much did Switzerland pay?
The final price is kept secret until today, but according to information in the newspaper it should be 15.50 euros per dose. Switzerland is supposed to have paid a similar price for its 3 million doses of Biontech / Pfizer vaccine, around 13 Swiss francs per dose.
If Switzerland had to pay the same price for these doses of vaccine that was initially offered to the EU, it would have been a sum of 177 million francs. Instead of 39 million. (euc)
