Big close: European scientists call for a new corona strategy

Almost all European countries are currently struggling with a high number of infections in the corona pandemic. 300 renowned scientists are now demanding joint and drastic measures to reduce the number.

Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy are just four of several European countries that have recently announced a tightening of crown measures. In Germany, even a blackout light has failed to curb the growing number of infections. Again “Spiegel” reports, renowned researchers from Europe are now calling for a joint statement in “The Lancet” a drastic reduction in the number of cases in Europe. More than 300 scientists have signed. Among them are representatives from Switzerland, for example epidemiologists Matthias Egger and Christian Althaus.

The researchers propose a guideline of a maximum of ten new infections per million inhabitants per day, for the whole of Europe. For Switzerland, that would be around 85 new infections per day. The 7-day average in this country is currently more than 4,000 new cases per day.

Low infection numbers only have advantages, according to the scientists’ position paper:

  • You save lives: When fewer people get infected, fewer people get sick or die.

  • They allow easier control: If the number of cases is low, the limited capacities do not reach their limits as quickly. Suspected cases can be constantly tested, tracked and isolated.

  • They ensure better planning: if the number of cases is stable, there is no need for hasty new restrictions. This planning security benefits the economy.

A look at countries such as China, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan shows that the economy will recover more quickly if infections are constantly monitored and infection chains are broken, so that the virus can be prevented from spreading to big scale.

Several European countries would have ordered (partial) closures, but never at the same time. So the virus could have been introduced over and over again. “In view of open borders, no single country can keep the number of infections low on its own, so a common goal and coordinated action is essential,” the scientists write.

Until now, it has still been possible to reduce the number of cases through a closure. A clearly perceptible loosening is then possible again. However, unlike the summer, this time the low number of cases must be defended. Otherwise, the success would be lost.
