SC Bern wins the Swiss Cup for the third time after 1965 and 2015. Coach Mario Kogler’s team prevailed in the derernière of this competition in the final at the ZSC Lions with 5: 2.
So far this season, most Bernese have had to go under. From late December to mid-February they were even last in the National League, currently they are 11th. Consequently, the SCB had to take a lot of malice.
A victory in the ice hockey cup does not enjoy the same status as winning the championship, but a title is a title. The Bernese made it clear from the start that they really wanted this win. You were very determined from the beginning. The preliminary decision in favor of the guests fell in the middle third, when they went from 1: 1 to 4: 1 (35th) in 8:59 minutes.
Vincent Praplan scored the 2: 1 (26th) from close range. 172 seconds later, he prepared the 3: 1 for André Heim, who was free in front of the goal. The Lions tried to react, but after an opportunity to make it 2: 3 they were met with a counterattack: four Berners against two Zurichers. The result was Jesper Olofsson’s 4-1, who had already scored 1-0 (12th).
Anyone who had expected a reaction from the Lions was wrong. In the 47th minute, Tristan Scherwey increased to 5: 1, so there was definitely no longer any doubt about the outcome of the game. Thus, the Bernese won the first and last stage of the competition, which was launched in 2014 after a 42-year hiatus.
Not enough of the lions
The victory in the final earned the SCB an additional 100,000 francs in bonuses, money that can be put to good use in the tough times on the table.
The animated first third had ended 1: 1. The Bernese, who played the third game in four days, did not take an undeserved lead. The previously conspicuous Olofsson was successful in the majority. In the championship, the power game is not one of the SCB’s strong points, in the cup final it only took 17 seconds to score after the first penalty against the ZSC.
The Lions had a quick response ready for the first deficit. 127 seconds later, Denis Hollenstein tied with a complete shot after Marcus Krüger won a matchup. The winger is a guarantee of goals this season, it was goal number 25 for him in all competitions. In the end, this was just a side note, like Maxim Noreau’s 5-2 in the power play (58th). Sven Andrighetto, who has always scored at least one scorer point in the last 19 games of the championship, gave the pass on goal.
Overall, very little came from the ZSC to win the cup for the fourth time after 1960, 1961 and 2016. The fact that Zurich currently lacks consistency is also due to the lack of key players like Garrett Roe and Chris Baltisberger, but It shouldn’t be an excuse.
