Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré win the semi-finals of the beach volleyball championship in Jurmala, Latvia with 21:11, 21:17.
Joana Heidrich / Anouk Vergé-Dépré ensured clear conditions from the start in the EM semifinal against Barbora Hermannova / Marketa Slukova (CZE). With a score of 2: 7, the Czechs felt compelled to take a first time-out. The Swiss did not let anything burn in the first set and secured it with 21:11.
In the second round, the resistance was stronger. But with an intermediate sprint, Heidrich / Vergé-Dépré finally made the decisive difference. His opponents drew closer towards the end. But it wasn’t too tight anymore. The Swiss duo were able to use the first ball of the match at 21:11, 21:17.
In the footsteps of Kuhn / Schnyder-Benoit
In Sunday’s final, Heidrich / Vergé-Depré will face the surprising duo Kim Behrens / Cinja Tillmann. The Germans prevailed on Saturday with 21:19, 21:17 against Russia’s Nadeschda Makrogussowa / Swetlana Cholomina, seeded number 4. In the quarterfinals, the Swiss duo had previously defeated Germany’s Margareta Kozuch / Laura Ludwig in three sets.
Heidrich / Vergé-Dépré have a chance to become the second Swiss women’s duo after Simone Kuhn / Nicole Schnyder-Benoit to win the European Championship in 2004. Two years ago, Betschart / Hüberli narrowly missed the win as second . And last year Heidrich / Vergé-Dépré had to leave the Moscow MS as fourth without a medal.
