With a clear majority, Reto Baumgartner was elected the new FCB club president at the written general meeting of FC Basel. Now he and his team face some challenges.
Happy and confident
Although he sat on needles for most of the day on Monday, he made the choice well. Reto Baumgartner received more than 90 percent of all votes for the position of new club president. But Baumgartner is surprised that the result is so high. “Yes, absolutely. Of course, I expected to be chosen, I was very happy so clearly and I was very, very happy,” says Reto Baumgartner.
The board is completed by Dominik Donzé and Benno Kaiser. So the work only rests on three shoulders and not on seven as before. “I was quite surprised that we are now three. A constellation that we accept. Either way, the members have made their decision and that is why it is important to get the most out of it, ”says the new club president, who clearly says that all three will master the tasks.
Everyone involved wanted the three previous board members to be re-elected. According to Reto Baumgartner, a certain continuity can be maintained to achieve the best for the club. However, he believes that the board of directors still needs to be strengthened.
FCB should be fine
With the start of the new presidency, expectations of changes by Reto Baumgartner at FCB also increase. To do this justice, the new club president focuses first on the bylaws. “We made a very clear order, and that is the amendment to the bylaws, which was not approved. It takes an adjustment, ”says Reto Baumgartner. But nothing will change overnight.
It remains to be seen if there will actually be any change. The Holding AG around former President Burgener still has three-quarters of the votes in the most important areas. For Baumgartner, therefore, it is important that there is cooperation and not against each other: “FCB should be fine, FCB should be successful and everyone needs it.”
Second job
So, with the statutes, everything remains the same. Reto Baumgartner is the club’s delegate and occupies a seat at FC Basel 1893 AG, which Bernhard Burgener will continue to own in the future. So, Reto Baumgartner has to face Bernhard Burgener and Roland Heri at the general meeting of shareholders of the corporation, whom he has already supported. It is primarily a vote of no-confidence by the members, which Baumgartner must now carry out. “I don’t have to understand it, I just have to fulfill it and that is my mandate, which emerged very clearly from this vote. So I’m taking it with me, I’m going to vote like that and that’s not a problem for me, ”said the new club president.
