After Morgestraich at 4 am, Basel is usually in a state of emergency for 72 hours. Not so this year. The “drey Scheenschte Dääg” was a victim of the pandemic for the second time. After 2020, Carnival 2021 will also be different than normal. Corona spoils the fun. But not all carnival people can be shot down.
This year, carnival fans are also joking about “Basel Carnival 2.0”. But little is how it always was. The local TV station “Telebasel” shows the full duration of Morgestraich 2019 as a consolation. And again, exactly at 4 am like the year before: no explosion. There are no lights out either.
After a few minutes, the ghost was over.
Last year around 1000 staunch people celebrated the Morgestraich, although the carnival was forbidden. This year, gatherings of more than five people are prohibited. Once again, a couple of people from the Basel Carnival didn’t want to let the fun go entirely. Around 300 people gathered in the Basel market square.
To the brief cheers of passersby, a fully occupied carnival tram passes. Only a few masked people can be seen from the crowd. The long-awaited metal music of the carnival can be heard from somewhere. From the speakers. A pair of very daring settle in chairs with tables. Wear a suitable mask and pour yourself drinks. After about ten minutes, the ghost was over. People leave, the streets are deserted again.
Virtual morgestraich
Many were sitting in front of the screen at home at 4 o’clock, with a hot flour soup in front of them, very well insulated from the virus and the otherwise colorful hustle and bustle. A Corona-compatible replacement program should be postponed. The Morgestraich took place mainly virtually.
In the «Diggiboscht» of the Basel Carnival Committee, the main activist of the Basel Carnival, Pia Inderbitzin, called for a quiet Morgestraich on her own four walls:
“Lay them down, bite into a sandwich or a nightingale while they lick, put a butterfly head or larva in a window and put it on Wegger, when the 22 Hornig Vieri hits on Monday!”
Everything normal again on March 7, 2022?
At least the date is already set for the next Morgestraich, which should make up for the two years of lost happiness: March 7, 2022! (kes)
