- Once the votes on the letter are counted, it is clear that the government is heading towards the center.
- Stephanie Eymann (LDP) and Kaspar Sutter (SP) are certainly elected on the second ballot.
- Baschi Dürr (FDP) is about 1,100 votes behind Esther Keller (GLP) and has already admitted electoral defeat.
- The new district president is Beat Jans (SP), who is clearly ahead of Stephanie Eymann and Esther Keller.
The final result is still pending. But it is already clear that the Basel government is moving to the center and Red-Green will lose the majority. This is because Heidi Mück of the Green Alliance was unable to take the seat of Elisabeth Ackermann (Greens). Ackermann had retired after a poor performance in the 1st vote. Mück was the alternate candidate on the left.
The starting position was extremely difficult, says Mück. “I had very little time to distinguish myself and the headwinds against my clear positions were strong.”
Stephanie Eymann (LDP) achieved the best result in the second ballot with more than 31,000 votes. “I did not expect such a good result, the greater my joy”, says Eymann. However, their joy is also a bit moderate because it seems that the bourgeoisie will not be able to get a majority in the government.
Kaspar Sutter (SP) remains in second place. In theory, the race for third place is still open, with Esther Keller (GLP) currently 1,165 votes ahead of former security director Baschi Dürr (FDP). However, it is unlikely that Dürr Keller will still be able to catch up with the polls.
Then Dürr told Radio SRF’s “Regionaljournal Basel”: “They have voted for me, I already admit my defeat.” Personally, he was satisfied with the outcome of his choice. “But another three had more votes, I congratulate them on the election.”
The result of the election to the presidium is clearer. Beat Jans (SP) has an advantage of more than 3,000 votes over Stephanie Eymann. Esther Keller is way back in the presidium.
So after 16 years, the Basel government leans towards the center. Commoners and Green Liberals landed a surprise coup with Stephanie Eymann and Esther Keller. Eymann has no political experience in Basel, Esther Keller has only been politicizing at the Basel Grand Council for about a year and a half.
Votes are counted in letters. The final result must be announced at 6 pm
The participation in the elections to the council of government is currently 53.5 percent, for the election of the presidio it is 52.6 percent.
Financial Director Tanja Soland (SP) had already been elected in the first vote on October 25 with a superior result. They were followed by Health Director Lukas Engelberger (CVP), Education Director Conradin Cramer (LDP) and the new member of the current National Councilor Beat Jans (SP).
