Starting next summer, schoolchildren in Basel will only be able to eat meat or fish once a week. This is the result of a current call for tenders from the Department of Education of the city of Basel, to which catering companies can apply, reports the “BZ”.
In order to serve food in schools in the future, strict nutrition plans must be adhered to: meat or fish are served once a week. Otherwise, the menus should not only be vegetarian, but also take into account allergies and diseases such as celiac disease, lactose intolerance and diabetes.
Alternative to pork
As the newspaper reports, an “attractive meatless option” is required on meatless days. If pork is offered, another type of meat should also be in the range. The salad should also be on the table every day, and twice a week a dessert based on fruits or milk.
In Basel, no meat has been served on lunch tables for three out of five meals for six years. However, the new requirements are much stricter, which has not been well received by the electorate in the past. Two years ago, the “Sustainable and Fair Nutrition” initiative, which envisaged an expansion of the vegetarian / plant-based range in public institutions, was rejected 67 percent against.
628,000 meals per year for sale
According to “BZ”, Basel wants to “significantly increase” the number of lunch tables in the coming years. According to the current situation, around 2300 pupils and their supervisors will have to be fed daily starting next school year. Within five years, this number will increase to 3,600 students and their supervisors. That would correspond to 682,000 meals, the newspaper estimates. (vof)
