In the new legislature, the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt is made up of seven parliamentary groups, in which a total of ten parties are represented. The novelty of February is the LPG, which in the cantonal elections last October had recovered its strength as a parliamentary group after a four-year hiatus.

In the term that was coming to an end, the parliament of the canton of Basel-Stadt consisted of only six parliamentary groups, because the Green Liberals lost one of their five seats in the Grand Council in 2016 and therefore lacked mandate. A parliamentary group needs at least five seats.

In the October 25 elections, however, the Green Liberals were able to grow strongly: they won a government seat with Esther Keller and doubled their delegation to eight council members on the Grand Council.

The largest parliamentary group in the next legislature remains the SP with 30 seats. Second is the Green Alliance, which, according to a statement from Parliamentary Services on Saturday, will be called the Green Alternative Alliance (GAB). The parliamentary group has 18 members.

The PLD (15 members), the SVP (11), the CVP-EPP (10) and the FDP (7) also have parliamentary groups. The representative of the active Bettingen (Oliver Battaglia) joins the PLD in turn. The only party not attached to the new legislature is Eric Weber as a representative of Volks-Aktion.

According to the announcement, the presidencies of the parliamentary groups in office will agree on the composition and the presidencies of the 13 permanent committees next week. 144 commission positions will be assigned. The larger a parliamentary group, the more committee seats it has.

Parliamentary group status is also important from a financial point of view. In Basel-Stadt, there is a basic amount of 10,000 francs from the state treasury and 500 francs per member per parliamentary group.
