“We make amazing things possible,” the operators of Switzerland’s newest boutique hotel promise on their website. And they do it in the true sense of the word. Because at a time that could hardly be more difficult for the catering and hospitality industry, they are opening a new hotel at the Volkshaus Basel. If that doesn’t surprise one or the other.
Planned for a long time
Opening a hotel above the Volkshaus restaurant is a dream very dear to the operators. We did not come out of nowhere. We’ve been there for eight years, ”says Adrian Hagenbach, who bought the city’s Volkshaus together with Leopold Weinberg in 2011. According to property developers and catering companies, the 24/7 operation was already planned at the time, but was not possible. one-time for financial reasons.

World class architecture
The new boutique hotel in Kleinbasel has 45 rooms and suites. They were designed by renowned architects “Herzog & de Meuron”, from whose pen came the newly designed Volkshaus bar and brasserie. «The quality of the project lies in its beauty and simplicity. We play with new and old elements. You can feel a kind of simplicity and elegant attitude, it’s not elitist, it’s cozy and welcoming, ”says senior partner Ascan Mergenthaler.
Bad moment?
The conditions under which the new boutique hotel opens in the city at the knee of the Rhine are more than demanding. Corona has already plunged many hotels into deep crisis, with no trace of tourists everywhere. And yet the hotel operators are sure: “We have to open right now.” If only to set an example. “We have had so many negative headlines behind us. Now we are offering our clients a kind of change of scenery. An escape from its own four walls, so to speak, ”says hotel manager Martin Reinshagen.
