Starting this Saturday, new measures against the corona virus will be applied in the canton of San Galo. In Pfalzkeller, the President of the Governing Council Bruno Damann, Department of Health, and the Government Counselor Fredy Fässler, Department of Security and Justice, reported on the new restrictions that will be applied as of Saturday, October 17.

  • Seat obligation when consuming: Club and bar guests should consume their drinks and food while seated. Close and numerous contacts should be avoided. Staff also have to wear a mask, as they come into contact with many people for several hours.
  • Mask requirement for public and private events with more than 30 people. The mask requirement also applies to groups of less than 30 people if the distance requirements cannot be met.
  • Ban on dancing in clubs and bars: Contact tracing data would show that many infections occur while dancing, according to a press release from the canton. Therefore, dance events are prohibited. This applies to public events in clubs, discos, dance halls, salsa clubs and bars. Dancing is still allowed in gyms, sports clubs, dance schools, and similar institutions.

The canton also wants to expand contact tracing. Ten more tracers will be used. The goal: to break the chains of infection as soon as possible.

Why is canton based on a mask requirement in stores? Damann points out the places where many infections occur: in the family, in clubs. “The number is likely higher because not everyone is honest.” Data from other cantons would also show that the requirement for masks in stores had little effect.

However, further restrictions are possible if the number of cases continues to increase. This could be a general mask requirement or limiting the number of people at the event, Damann says.
