Baden-Württemberg wants to restrict border traffic for tourists and shoppers

The German state of Baden-Württemberg wants to significantly restrict small border traffic for shopping tourists from Switzerland with a quarantine obligation.

This is how it looked on June 20, the first weekend after the close of the crown crisis in Konstanz (D) relaxed.

This is what June 20 looked like: the first weekend after the close of the crown crisis in Konstanz (D) relaxed.

(sat / rwa) The planned step would mean that Germans close to the border would not be able to ski in Switzerland, nor would the Swiss be able to shop at the supermarket along the Rhine. According to information from the German news agency DPA on Tuesday, the background to the recent tightening is the epidemiological situation in southwestern Germany and in the border regions.

“The risk of additional sources of infection emerging inland when traveling to and from Baden-Württemberg is limited,” the DPA quoted Stuttgart government circles as saying. The “Badische Tagblatt” first reported on plans to adjust it.

The border must remain open for travelers, commerce and families.

However, the regulation should continue to allow free entry from quarantine for work, school, medical or family reasons. The new regulation will be decided and go into effect on Tuesday. With the hardening, Baden-Württemberg would take a step that the state of Bavaria had already taken at the end of November.

Until now, Swiss citizens of the border cantons can still enter and leave the country for short visits of a maximum of 24 hours. This also applies to purchases. It was different in the first wave of spring: at that time the borders were narrow, except for travelers. Private reasons also did not allow crossing the Rhine at that time.
