The Axenstrasse between Sisikon and Flüelen is closed until further notice after an automatic rockfall alarm in Gumpisch. The blockade took place from 00:30 on the Uri and Schwyz side, as announced by the cantonal police of Uri and Schwyz on Friday morning.
The automatic alarm activated the lock. The cause is not yet known. It remains to be seen if the heavy rains impacted in the last few hours. Geologists will explore the area around the Gumpisch on Friday.
A rockfall in Gumpisch in mid-June had already caused the Axenstrasse to close for a day. It was the second rockfall in less than 24 hours. It was closed in June due to rainfall.
Security must be increased
In early May of this year, several hundred cubic meters of material fell on Axenstrasse. The warning infrastructure was also damaged. As part of the “Neue Axenstrasse” construction project, security will be increased. Currently, the entire project is blocked due to objections.
Axenstrasse is part of the A4 and connects Brunnen and Flüelen on the right bank of Lake Lucerne. Traverse the Gumpisch Rockfall Zone between Flüelen and Sisikon. (SDA)
