Corona vaccines are a billion dollar business. Organized crime is also involved.
Europol, the EU law enforcement agency, has already warned against illegal activities related to planned vaccinations. The Fedpol Federal Police is now doing the same.
Because the pandemic has been a lucrative business for criminals from the beginning. “It can be assumed that the production, distribution, storage or administration of Covid vaccines also offers a number of new possibilities for criminal acts,” says Florian Näf, media spokesman for the Federal Police Office Fedpol.
Fake Covid vaccines
According to Fedpol’s analysis, Switzerland will hardly be free from such machinations. Currently, the focus is on supply chains.
“Criminals could try to get real vaccination doses,” explains Näf. “But there is also the risk of counterfeit Covid vaccines being released.”
To avoid this, the Swiss authorities have taken numerous security measures. In the first phase, the supply of vaccine doses will be provided exclusively by the Swiss army. Manufacturers deliver their vaccines directly from factories to secret locations.
Online or by phone
Only then are the cans distributed to the cantons, either to cantonal institutions or wholesalers. Criminals, on the other hand, will try to sell branched or fake vaccination doses over the Internet, just as they do with other drugs.
Fedpol has also observed such examples. “Fraudulent offers are already being made in relation to the Covid-19 vaccine,” warns Näf.
Criminals also try to get money with phone calls, for example by promising an early vaccination in exchange for an advance payment. The authorities warn against these types of fraud attempts and offers on the Internet. In addition, the Covid vaccine will be free for everyone, as the federal government emphasizes.
