David Graeber, author of books like “Debt: The First 5000 Years” or “Bullshit Jobs: The Real Purpose of Work” died on Wednesday at the age of 59.

His wife, the artist and author Nika Dubrovsky, confirmed his death on Twitter this Thursday: “Yesterday the best person in the world, my husband and friend, David Graeber, died in a hospital in Venice.”

Graeber taught at the London School of Economics in the department of anthropology until recently. In addition, she wrote non-fiction books that sold well around the world. He was considered an anarchist and repeatedly made a name for himself with critical statements about wage labor, hierarchies, and the police.

In his latest book “Bullshit Jobs” in 2018, he expressed the view that many employees in business and management are superfluous. Managers, civil servants and lawyers would only kill time in their workplaces. As an alternative to the capitalist economic system, he proposed unconditional basic income.

In an interview with this newspaper two years ago, he said that work has become an end in itself. “If people were happy, they would quit their ‘shit jobs’, give a fuck about the theological work ethic, and focus on the important things.”

The exact circumstances of Graeber’s death are not yet known.
