Ski fans were able to breathe a sigh of relief on Sunday: Following speculation that the Lauberhorn races could be canceled, the FIS and the canton of Bern gave the green light on Sunday. But now new rumors are circulating. Won’t the World Cup classic take place after all?

Due to the high crown numbers at Wengen, it has been questioned in recent days whether the Lauberhorn races should take place next weekend. FIS race director Markus Waldner was concerned that he did not want to jeopardize the highlights of the season with the World Championship in Cortina in February.

On Sunday morning, representatives of the Bern Canton Health Department, the Wengen organizers, the FIS and Swiss-Ski exchanged ideas. In the video conference it was finally decided that the races on the Lauberhorn (downhill on Saturday and slalom on Sunday) were justifiable.

Will the great U-turn now continue? As the Austrian radio station “Ö3” reports, Lauberhorn’s races have already been canceled. “Blick” also informs, referring to information from the “Salzburger Nachrichten”, that the World Cup classic is about to be canceled.

Teams are instructed not to travel to Switzerland

You have the information from the Austrian Ski Association, which in turn has it from the French. “The health department of the canton of Bern changed its decision overnight, the FIS must support this decision. The reason is the high number of corona cases, including cases of the mutated virus ”, writes the“ Blick ”.

Many British tourists were recently in Wengen. Of the 1,100 residents, 51 people tested positive. The rejection is not yet official. However, the teams received instructions from the FIS World Federation on Monday morning not to travel to Switzerland for the time being. And the German downhill skier Dominik Schwaiger writes in his Instagram story: “Wengen canceled” (Wengen canceled).

The Austrians may also fear the cancellation of the Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbühel, which are just a week after the Lauberhorn weekend. If the athletes had to be quarantined after the diversion to Wengen, the Kitzbühel races would be in jeopardy. Apparently, the FIS wants to announce the final decision shortly.
