No refugee, no asylum seeker. The Vienna Killer is a Vienna-born Austrian. The 20-year-old Islamist was on the list of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. And he just got out of prison last December.
The Austrian police identified the terrorist who was arrested and shot at the foot of the Ruprechtskirche. He is an Islamist known to the authorities. The 20-year-old is a supporter of the radical Islamic terrorist militia Islamic State (IS).

Mother warned the authorities
The previous year, the Viennese had to answer in court due to his membership in IS. According to media reports, her own mother had approached the authorities. He was later sentenced to 22 months in prison, participated in a de-radicalization program, and was released early due to a favorable prognosis. According to his former lawyer Rast, he misled everyone.
In April 2019, the suspected terrorist testified before the Vienna Regional Court that he had never felt disadvantaged in his life. During puberty he began to deal with Islam, according to the daily “Der Standard”, which followed the trial at the time. According to his own statements, at the end of 2016 he ended up in the “wrong mosque”. Her performance in school got worse and worse, and there were more and more arguments with her mother. “I wanted to leave home,” the man told the court. I expected a better life from IS. “Your own apartment, your own income.”
ISIS trip to Kabul ended in Turkey
A trip to Kabul to visit the Islamic State with a friend failed because young people realized too late that they needed a visa for Afghanistan. He earned his plane ticket money with a summer job. In September 2018, the suspected terrorist left only for Turkey. From there, he wanted to go to Syria to fight for IS. He distributed terrorist militia propaganda through the Telegram messaging service, according to the newspaper “Heute”.
Two days after his arrival in Turkey, the Turkish police arrested him in a supposed safe house, which his lawyer described as a “rat hole” with no shower, toilet or running water. He was imprisoned there for four months before being transferred to Austria. Late last year, the authorities apparently classified him as no longer dangerous, for which he was released early from prison.
The perpetrator posed on Instagram
On Monday, police bullets stopped him nine minutes after the first shots. Austrian Interior Minister Nehammer confirmed that the 20-year-old had posted a photo on his Instagram account prior to the attack showing him holding two weapons that he was believed to have used later in the attack. It is unclear whether the man also posts an oath of allegiance to the Islamic State.
In the text, the man declared allegiance to the “leader of the believers”, the head of the Islamic State Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi. The Instagram account was deleted Monday night.
