  • Daniil Medvedev (ATP 4) defeats Novak Djokovic (ATP 1) in the second game of Round Robin in 2 sets 6: 3, 6: 3.
  • Thanks to his second victory in the second game, the Russian is from the beginning as a semi-finalist at the ATP Finals in London.
  • In the afternoon game, Alexander Zverev (ATP 7) defeated Diego Schwartzman (ATP 9) in 3 sets 6: 3, 4: 6, 6: 3.

Unusually many unforced errors and only 50 percent returned surcharges. Also, lethargic and somewhat out of ideas. So I could briefly summarize Novak Djokovic’s appearance in the 2-set loss to Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Finals in London.

The Serbian entered the match as a favorite. The Russian won 2 of the last 3 games against the world number one. And that he can hurt the Serb in London, Medvedev proved from the start. He didn’t let Djokovic’s well-known attrition tactics bother him and shone with strong defensive tennis.

Medvedev seizes fifth break opportunity

Until the score of 3: 3 it was an open game. The seventh game in the first set when Djokovic served, however, already set the course for Medvedev’s victory. The Russian had left 4 break opportunities until he was able to use his 5th at 4: 3 after more than 10 minutes of playing time. Djokovic lost the thread, because a short time later he gave his counterpart the first sentence with a double error.

Normally the world number 1 knows how to get out of such dangerous situations, but against Medvedev there was no chance of a change of course. On the contrary: the 24-year-old Russian was clearly the best player and also dictated what happened in the second set. Thanks to an early break and good service games, he pulled away 3-0. Djokovic couldn’t find an answer to that. After 1 hour and 21 minutes, Medvedev used his first match point to score 6: 3 and 6: 3.

Djokovic has to comply against Zverev

With this victory, Medvedev is confirmed as the second semi-finalist in this year’s ATP Finals after Dominic Thiem. Djokovic, who started the tournament without dropping a set in the first game, will now face Alexander Zverev (ATP 7) on Friday. The winner of this duel will also get the semi-final ticket.

So it goes

Dominic Thiem (ATP 3) and Andrej Rublew (ATP 7) face off in the London Group’s afternoon game on Thursday (starting at 3:00 p.m.). In the afternoon (9:10 p.m.) Rafael Nadal (ATP 2) will face Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 6). You can follow both games live on SRF Zwei and SRF Sport app.
