- On Friday afternoon, a man was attacked and killed in the street near a secondary school northwest of Paris.
- The man was beheaded by an attacker according to police sources.

According to the first findings, the victim is a teacher at the Bois d’Aulne institute in the city of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, northeast of Paris. He was attacked in the street on Friday afternoon. The teacher is said to have shown his students cartoons of Muhammad during class on the subject of freedom of expression, various media reported, citing law enforcement sources. There is no official confirmation of this.
Shot of the alleged perpetrator
A short time later, the alleged perpetrator was arrested in the neighboring town of Éragny-sur-Oise by police officers from the Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC). It is said that he tried to attack the police with a knife and was shot. Local mayor Thibault Humbert told BFM TV that the alleged perpetrator had been killed.
Various media outlets reported that the attacker was said to be an 18-year-old. There was no official confirmation for this. Investigators from the Antiterrorist Prosecutor’s Office have taken over the investigation. One of the investigations is for murder with a terrorist background.
Macron personally on site
After the attack, President Emmanuel Macron arrived at the crime scene in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine and met with the crisis team. Macron said late at night that the slain teacher was the victim of a “characteristic Islamist terrorist attack.” But you wouldn’t get away with this violence. The man taught his students about freedom of speech and the freedom to believe or not believe.
The fight against Islamic terrorism is one of the priorities of Macron and the central government of Prime Minister Jean Castex. France has been rocked by Islamist attacks for years.
Politically unanimous condemnation
“The murder of a history professor is an attack on freedom of expression and the values of the republic,” wrote the president of the National Assembly, Richard Ferrand, on Twitter.
“Islamism is waging a war against us: we have to expel it from our country,” Marine Le Pen of the Rassemblement National said on Twitter.
Just a few weeks ago there was a knife attack in front of the former editorial building of the satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo” in Paris. Two people were injured; here too, investigators assume a terrorist background.
