One of the really great players in the ring lost his last fight. Fritz Chervet died at the age of 77. The Swiss Boxing Association first published a death report on Instagram on Sunday.

“The best Swiss boxer”

President Andreas Anderegg then added to the news agency keystone-sda: “Fritz Chervet is the best boxer Switzerland has ever seen.”

Chervet was admitted to the Meyriez-Murten hospital on Saturday morning after a collapse and died there the same day. The uncle of professional boxer Alain Chervet spent the last year of his life in the nursing home.

Six-time European champion

Chervet, which was mostly called “Fritzli” due to its height (1.65 m) and combat weight of 50.8 kg, experienced its heyday in the 1970s. At that time it easily filled entire stadiums. In March 1972 he won the European flyweight title against the Italian Fernando Atzori at the Bern Festival Hall. The Bernese repeated the feat EM five times.

In total, he achieved 58 victories in his glorious career, 10 losses and 2 draws.

World title just lost

Chervet fought the same opponent twice for the WBA flyweight title. The first fight in Thailand against Chartchai Chionoi for the then vacant title that he lost prematurely on May 17, 1973 due to a technical knockout.

The rematch of April 27, 1974 at the Hallenstadion in Zurich caused great changes. The fight ended in a draw after 15 rounds, Chionoi remained world champion. Following the judge’s verdict, riots broke out and the event was canceled.
