At least 41 people died in the serious train accident in Taiwan. Taiwanese authorities confirmed this on Friday.

Consequently, 66 injured people were also treated in hospitals. According to the fire department, the train with eight cars and more than 350 passengers on board derailed while passing through a tunnel. Shortly before leaving the tunnel, a construction vehicle fell down a slope and collided with the train on the tracks.

Taiwanese Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang apologized to passengers on Friday and expressed his condolences. “I would like to express my condolences to the families of the victims and injured passengers,” Su said at a news conference in Taipei.

A Tunnelwand zerdrückt

Rescue work continued on Friday morning (CEST). Photos and videos in the Taiwanese media showed part of the train that appeared to be crushed by the tunnel wall. Several derailed cars lined up in front of the tunnel.

As reported by the Taiwanese news agency CNA, the express train was heading to the city of Taitung, in southeastern Taiwan. The accident occurred at the beginning of the multi-day commemorative festival. The last time there was a serious train accident in Taiwan was in October 2018. At that time, 18 people died.
