Officials from the Feldkirch customs office seized 781 gold and silver bars from a car in mid-August. A family from the Czech Republic wanted to smuggle the precious metal worth 750,000 francs back to their home country via Austria.
According to a statement from the Austrian Ministry of Finance on Tuesday, the contraband was confiscated. The criminal process awaits the driver of the vehicle.
The smuggling attempt was discovered at the border crossing between Ruggell FL and Feldkirch-Nofels A. When they entered the country, the Czech family stated that they had withdrawn 4,000 euros from a bank in Liechtenstein. However, upon inspecting the car, three aluminum suitcases were found containing silver. Gold was discovered in the adult daughter’s purse. In the end, customs officials found 74 gold bars and 707 silver bars, with a total weight of 66 kilograms.
Anyone entering or leaving the European Union must declare funds and precious metals with a value of CHF 10,000 or more. According to the Ministry of Finance, import duties for silver alone amount to almost 104,000 euros. In addition to the import tax, the family also expects a fine.
