The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has reaffirmed the safety of the Astrazeneca corona vaccine. However, an additional warning is added about possible rare cases of blood clots (thrombosis) in the cerebral veins. The EMA announced Thursday in Amsterdam after a special meeting of the safety committee.
However, the EMA does not see any increased health risks and recommends continuing vaccinations. “The vaccine is safe and effective against Covid-19 and the benefits far outweigh the risks,” said EMA chief Emer Cooke.
Several countries stopped vaccinating
Germany and other EU countries had stopped using the vaccine for the time being. The history was reports of blood clots in the cerebral veins in connection with vaccines. Vaccination campaigns in the federal states were delayed due to the suspension of vaccines.
The EMA reiterated that there was no evidence that vaccines caused the incidents. However, it is not impossible. Therefore, the examinations and studies would continue.
EMA experts had verified all the case data together with the vaccine manufacturer, blood disease experts and health authorities. On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) had called for the vaccine to continue to be used. (SDA)
